📖 The Full Story

Brazil's Roswell — three young women encountered a creature, a police officer died after allegedly capturing one, and the Brazilian military denied everything. Thirty years later, witnesses, doctors, and a neurosurgeon have come forward.

In January 1996, multiple residents of Varginha, a small coffee-growing city in Minas Gerais, Brazil, reported seeing strange creatures and a possible crashed craft. Three young women encountered a bipedal creature with red eyes, oily brown skin, and three bumps on its head. A police officer who allegedly captured a creature died weeks later of an unexplained infection. The Brazilian military launched an investigation concluding the girls saw a mentally disabled homeless man nicknamed 'Mudinho' and that all military activity was routine. The case remains one of ufology's most debated, often called 'Brazil's Roswell.'

On January 20, 1996, around 3:30 PM, three young women — Liliane Fátima Silva (16), her sister Valquíria (14), and their friend Kátia Andrade Xavier (22) — were walking through the Jardim Andere neighborhood of Varginha when they encountered a creature crouched against a wall in a vacant lot. It was approximately 4 feet tall, with a large head bearing three bumps or ridges, red bulging eyes, oily brown skin, three-fingered hands, and V-shaped feet. The creature emitted a strong ammonia-like smell. The girls fled in terror, telling their mother they had seen "the devil."

Their mother, Luiza Helena da Silva, returned to the scene 20–30 minutes later. The creature was gone, but she found a V-shaped footprint with three large toes and the ammonia smell lingered. She reported being visited by four men in black suits who offered a briefcase of cash if her daughters would go on TV and say the creature was a calf, a sick dog, or a sick human. She refused and threatened to call police.

That same morning, fire department logs (later obtained under Brazil's Access to Information Law) show suspicious gaps — only 9 incidents logged for the entire day, with renumbered and partially erased entries. Firefighters with nets and thick gloves reportedly captured a creature in the woods. A military truck from the ESA base in Três Corações arrived. Soldiers entered the woods. Witnesses reported hearing four rifle shots.

At approximately 5:30 PM, Corporal Marco Eli Chereze (23), a plainclothes military police intelligence officer, allegedly grabbed a creature with bare hands during a surveillance mission. The creature scratched his left arm. He drove it to a health center (which refused it), then to Hospital Regional de Varginha. Dr. Italo Venturelli, a neurosurgeon on duty, examined the being and later stated: "I've been a doctor for forty-six years and have performed thousands of surgeries. To me, it was obvious that this was not a human being."

Chereze developed a strange greasy residue on his skin and a persistent ammonia odor. An abscess appeared under his left armpit. He was hospitalized on February 7, transferred to ICU on February 15, and died the same day. Official cause: sepsis and pneumonia from a "benign bacteria." His family never accepted the explanation. Dr. João Janini, a specialist with 50,000+ autopsies, found a bacterium "of extremely high aggressiveness and lethality" suggesting "alien origin." A legal request to exhume Chereze's body has been filed.

The Brazilian Army concluded a 357-page investigation (Inquérito Policial Militar) around 2010, stating the girls saw "Mudinho" (Luiz Antônio de Paula), a mentally disabled homeless man, and that all military activity was routine. No official from any branch of the Brazilian government has ever acknowledged anything extraordinary. In 30 years, no physical evidence has been recovered.

Yet witnesses never changed their stories. In January 2026, for the 30th anniversary, Dr. Italo Venturelli traveled to Washington D.C. to testify before U.S. Congress and at the National Press Club. The three girls provided fresh video statements. James Fox's "Moment of Contact" documentary brought the case to international attention. Varginha fully embraced its identity as "Brazil's UFO capital" — building a spaceship-shaped water tower, an ET museum, and a 4-meter alien statue. The case remains unresolved, haunting, and deeply human.

Witnesses claim a military convoy left Varginha carrying bodies of extraterrestrials to the State University of Campinas (Unicamp) for examination. Authorities deny all.

The 'Mudinho' Misidentification Theory

The three girls encountered Luiz Antônio de Paula, nicknamed 'Mudinho' (meaning 'little mute'), a mentally/physically disabled homeless man known in the community who often crouched by walls. The Commander of 24th Police Battalion Military presented photographs matching the description. Heavy rains made Mudinho dirty, explaining the 'oily' appearance. His crouching position by a wall matched the girls' account.

Counter: The three women have always rejected this explanation. They knew Mudinho personally and had seen him in the neighborhood. What they encountered, they insist, was not a human being. The creature had red eyes, three bumps on its head, and three-fingered hands — not features of a human.

Routine Military Operations

The 'Dwarf Couple' Explanation

The creature seen by witnesses was 'an expectant dwarf couple and a mentally handicapped dwarf.'

Counter: This explanation is considered absurd by both believers and skeptics. No evidence supports it. It was never formally investigated.

Mass Psychogenic Illness / Media Sensationalism

Called it 'the most compelling example of a case where literally nothing at all happened that was remotely unusual, and was magnified into a case considered unassailable proof of alien visitation.' The 357-page official investigation tracked down the original cause of each reported event — 'none of which had anything to do with each other, and none of which involved aliens or crashed flying saucers.' No physical evidence has ever been recovered.

Counter: The sheer number and consistency of witnesses over 30 years is itself a form of evidence. Dr. Italo Venturelli, a practicing neurosurgeon, risked his career to testify. The 'Nothing Happened' Official Position

Cultural Context — Brazil 1996, Media Frenzy

Brazil in 1996 was experiencing economic and social instability. The story spread through gossip before being amplified by national media (Fantástico had 52-60% viewership). The pattern of rumor amplification — from 'strange animal' to 'alien creature' to 'captured extraterrestrial' — is consistent with mass psychogenic illness and media contagion.
