Portuguese Air Force lieutenant Júlio Guerra was alone over the Maxial training area when he reported an oval object below his aircraft. He turned to identify it. According to his later first-person account, the object climbed to his altitude, began circling him — and remained long enough for two other military pilots to arrive and see it.
Guerra's published first-person account places him over the Maxial zone at about 10:50 in the morning, flying solo in a DHC-1 Chipmunk at roughly 5,000 to 5,500 feet. The weather, he recalled, was clear and cloudless. He was heading toward his designated training area to climb for aerobatic practice.

What followed is the first extraordinary claim in the chronology. Guerra said the object climbed from near ground level to his altitude in less than ten seconds, wavered briefly and then stabilised ahead of him. He described a metallic body built from two rounded halves separated by a brighter central band, with the upper surface reflecting sunlight and the lower portion appearing darker or reddish.

It was a daylight Portuguese Air Force encounter reported on 2 November 1982 near Ota. Lieutenant Júlio Miguel Guerra said an unidentified metallic object climbed toward his DHC-1 Chipmunk and circled it. He radioed the base; pilots Carlos Garcês and António Gomes then joined him in a second Chipmunk and, according to Guerra, also saw the object. The case is therefore best treated as a three-pilot visual encounter whose extraordinary performance claims still depend heavily on visually inferred range and motion.
The surviving published record is unusually useful because Guerra described shape, colour and motion in his own voice. But the page must keep those observations in the correct evidential category: they are pilot testimony, not instrument measurements.
Guerra described a metallic object with upper and lower sections joined by a bright central band. The upper surface reflected the sun; the underside appeared darker and reddish.
He said it repeatedly traced a large leftward elliptical route, apparently ranging from about 5,000 feet on one side of him to roughly 10,000 feet on the other.
The altitude, speed, distance and shape estimates came from visual observation in open sky. No onboard ranging system fixed the object's actual distance.
Guerra radioed Ota tower and reported a strange object flying around him. His account records an immediate mundane suggestion from the controller and pilots in other training zones: perhaps it was a balloon. Guerra challenged that idea and invited sceptical colleagues to come and see it.
Two Portuguese Air Force officers, Carlos Garcês and António Gomes, flew over in another Chipmunk. Guerra said they reached the area after about fifteen minutes, acquired the object visually and remained for roughly another ten minutes.

But the three men did not provide three perfectly independent, instrument-separated observations: they were in radio contact, sharing position information and watching the same scene from nearby aircraft.

Guerra wrote that his Chipmunk was flying inside the object's reported orbit while Garcês and Gomes remained outside it. On each circuit, the object appeared to pass between the two aircraft. The pilots therefore compared it with the known 7.75-metre fuselage length of the Chipmunk and estimated the object at roughly eight to ten feet across.

The estimate becomes strong only if the object's path really placed it between aircraft at the assumed distances. The surviving public account does not provide enough measured geometry to turn the eight-to-ten-foot figure into a precise dimension.
The reported passage between two known aircraft is one of the most valuable parts of the narrative because it attempts to anchor apparent size to a real reference object.
But without independently measured separation, slant range and exact track data, the public record cannot prove the object's physical diameter to the nearest foot.

Later accounts state that the pilots filed written reports and that Guerra prepared a drawing the following day. The drawing is central to later case literature, but its rights and archival custody require care.
After the co-witnesses had been present for roughly ten minutes, Guerra decided to intercept the object. He aimed not directly at it but toward a point on the reported elliptical track, expecting the object to alter course.
Instead, he said it came toward him, passed directly over his Chipmunk and stopped above it at a distance he estimated at about fifteen feet. He described freezing in surprise, closing his eyes and waiting for an impact that did not come.
The object then departed toward the Serra de Sintra and the sea so rapidly that Guerra said he had no time to react. He later wrote that one of his colleagues saw this entire final manoeuvre.

Modern retellings also state that all three pilots filed written reports and that Guerra produced a drawing the following day. The existence of the drawing is widely reproduced, but its copyright and archival custody are not clear enough for The UAP Map to embed it casually. We therefore link readers to the source trail rather than presenting a rights-uncertain reproduction as our own asset.
Portugal's RTP later dramatised the Ota encounter in its series Encontros Imediatos, confirming the event's place in Portuguese public history. That programme is useful as cultural and interview history, not as primary evidence for the 1982 flight itself.
Why link rather than embed? The sketch is authentic case-related material in the published record, but the reproduction rights and current archival custody are not sufficiently clear for The UAP Map to claim reuse rights. Linking preserves the evidence trail without presenting the image as our asset.
The strongest accessible narrative source. It supplies date, time, altitude, aircraft type, named co-witnesses, chronology, size estimate and the final intercept claim.
Later sources describe an extensive Portuguese civilian scientific investigation and Air Force cooperation. Those claims are part of the case history, but the full original study is not presently available here for line-by-line verification, so derived speed figures are treated as later calculations rather than direct flight-instrument measurements.
The balloon suggestion was not invented decades later by a sceptic. Guerra says it was proposed over the radio during the encounter by the controller and pilots in other training areas. He rejected it because he believed he had just watched the object climb thousands of feet in seconds and then perform repeated powered circuits.
If those distances and trajectories were physically correct, an ordinary balloon is plainly inadequate. But an explanation must first ask how those distances were established. In a clear sky, a small object at unknown range can produce large errors in inferred altitude, closure rate and speed. A pilot can be highly experienced and still face a geometry problem when the target has no known size or distance.
A small balloon could present an apparently wingless oval body. It struggles with the reported rapid climb, repeating ellipse, close stop and departure — if those manoeuvres are accepted literally.
Unknown range can convert the observer aircraft's own movement into dramatic apparent target motion. This is the most important conventional test because most performance figures are inferred visually.
No conventional aircraft identification is demonstrated in the accessible record. A small model or unusual aircraft would still need to account for the three-pilot observation history and reported geometry.
Date, time, altitude, aircraft type, named co-witnesses, reported motion, size comparison and intercept sequence come from the published first-person account.
RTP independently preserves the event date, Guerra's identity as a Portuguese Air Force pilot and his contact with Ota control. It is later media history, not a flight instrument record.
The often-repeated CNIFO team size, page count and reconstructed velocities are retained only as later-source claims until the underlying original study can be checked directly.
Ota is compelling because the narrative does not end with one pilot seeing a distant light. Guerra described a structured object in daylight, called other pilots to the scene, named those co-witnesses, watched the object for an extended period and later published the encounter under his own name.
The same facts also define the limits. Almost every extraordinary performance claim — the climb, the orbital speed, the fifteen-foot stop and the departure — depends on visually inferred range and motion. The public record available here does not contain an instrument track that independently fixes those quantities.
That leaves the reader with a serious aviation encounter rather than a manufactured certainty: three pilots, a persistent object, a contemporaneous reporting tradition, and a flight geometry that deserves to be tested as carefully as it is retold.
