At approximately 07:10 on 1 September 2015, Pantex Plant's Ground Surveillance Radar detected an unknown object west of the nuclear-weapons facility near Amarillo, Texas.
It was moving slowly — about 10 to 15 miles per hour — on a northerly track.
That speed is important. Nothing in the surviving report requires impossible performance.
What happened next is what makes Pantex unusual.
The plant's Protective Force responded under its approved security plan for unmanned aerial systems. Gates into and out of security areas were immediately secured. Patrols moved to protect assets. Officers went after the object.
A radar return had become a nuclear-security incident.
A Protective Force lieutenant and a Security Police Officer spotted the object and followed it north.
They tried to intercept it as it crossed Pantex Drive so they could look at it from below. They could not catch up. When they stopped and got out of their vehicle, they reported that the object made no sound. Using binoculars, they said they could not identify a propulsion system.
Other personnel described a roughly diamond-like object, more rounded at the top. One binocular observer estimated it at about four feet tall and two feet wide at the bottom. Colour descriptions disagreed: some personnel called it black; others reported silver, red and blue.
Those estimates are observations, not laboratory measurements. But they came from several members of a professional protective force responding to a real security alert.
A separate group of Security Police Officers in a Bearcat equipped with a Common Remotely Operated Weapon System — CROWS — also acquired the object.
According to the report, they tracked it by camera for roughly three to five minutes. They estimated it at 100 to 200 feet above the ground while they were approximately 75 to 100 metres away.
The nearest Ground Surveillance Radar tower also recorded video.
That footage is one of the most valuable pieces of the case — and one of its limitations. The report itself says the video provides little detail because of the distance.
That sentence matters. The people writing the incident report did not pretend the imagery could show more than it did.

The released report preserves both the distant surveillance image and a page headed “Sandia National Labs Enhanced Images of the Object.”
Enhancement can help make structure or contrast easier to inspect. It cannot manufacture information that was not captured in the original recording, and the released report does not say Sandia identified the object.
The right way to show these images is therefore exactly as the government released them — not through another round of sharpening, AI reconstruction or artistic interpretation.
The incident report records that all evidence from the event was turned over to an FBI agent. The released file does not include the FBI's eventual disposition.
The final procedural step may be the most intriguing.
The incident report says all evidence — including statements and video — was turned over to an FBI agent.
And then, in the public record we have, the trail stops.
The released file contains no FBI disposition. It does not include a final Sandia identification. It does not say that a balloon, drone or other conventional object was later found. It simply documents the event and the transfer of the evidence.
That does not mean the FBI failed to identify it. It means the released public record does not tell us what happened next.
A balloon is a serious possibility.
The initial speed — 10 to 15 mph — is entirely compatible with a wind-borne object under some conditions. The modest reported size and the absence of obvious sound also keep that possibility alive.
A small unmanned aircraft is another plausible candidate. Pantex itself responded under its unmanned-aerial-system security plan.
The harder details are the reported changes in speed and direction and the eyewitness descriptions of shape. But those observations have to be tested against the actual local wind field before being treated as evidence of controlled manoeuvring.
So Pantex is not a case where the alternatives should be pushed aside. The mystery is stronger when stated accurately: a conventional object may explain it, but the released official record does not supply the identification.
The most useful new evidence may be completely conventional: weather reconstruction, UAS identification, FBI disposition, Sandia notes or a better copy of the original video.
A conventional identification would materially improve this case just as much as new anomalous evidence.
Pantex is one of the cleanest examples of why “unidentified” and “extraordinary” are not the same claim.
The object did not display publicly demonstrated impossible speed. It did not attack the facility. The report explicitly says it remained over open, unpopulated areas and did not approach sensitive assets.
Yet the event is exceptionally well documented by UAP standards.
A nuclear-weapons plant detected the object on ground-surveillance radar. Multiple security personnel acquired it visually. Officers used binoculars. A CROWS camera tracked it. A radar-tower camera recorded it. Sandia enhanced the imagery. The evidence was turned over to the FBI.
The released government file still supplies no identification.
That is enough.
The object was unknown. The security response was not.
