Missile-area personnel begin reporting lights over several hours.
Ground crews were already reporting a strange light near the missile field. A B‑52 was asked to look. What followed was recorded in controller transcripts, witness forms, maps — and thirteen photographs of the bomber's radarscope.
Minot in 1968 was not an ordinary airfield. The 5th Bomb Wing had moved to the base that July and operated the B‑52H. The 91st Strategic Missile Wing controlled Minuteman I intercontinental ballistic missiles spread through the surrounding North Dakota countryside.
In the early hours of 24 October, security and missile-support personnel began reporting unusual lights. The reports accumulated. Base controllers eventually asked a B‑52 — call sign JAG 31 — to look toward the area while it was already airborne on a training mission.
That decision is where Minot becomes unusually valuable. The case moves from distant ground lights into an aircraft, an airborne radar set and recorded air-traffic-control communications.

At first the crew reported difficulty seeing anything through haze. The transcript then records a separate development: the aircraft later reported an airborne radar return off its left side, close enough to be expressed in roughly mile-scale distance.
The distinction matters. A ground witness seeing a light and an aircraft radar detecting a return are not automatically the same target. Minot is strongest when those evidence streams are presented together without pretending their identity is already proved.
Project Blue Book's final report treated different parts of the Minot episode differently.
It proposed Sirius and the B‑52 itself for some ground observations. It suggested that the aircraft's radar contact and temporary UHF transmission problem could be attributable to a plasma phenomenon similar to ball lightning. For the B‑52's visual observation, the report floated Vega, a ground light, or plasma.
That is important because “Blue Book explained Minot” can imply more certainty than the actual wording contains. The conclusion is a bundle of candidate explanations applied to different evidence streams.
The analytical question is therefore not whether each proposed mechanism is possible in the abstract. It is whether the timing, geometry, radar behaviour and witness descriptions demonstrate that those mechanisms actually fit the recorded events.
Blue Book attributed the ground visual reports primarily to astronomical and aircraft stimuli.
The final report said the radar contact and temporary UHF loss could be attributable to plasma similar to ball lightning.
Several alternatives were offered rather than one demonstrated identification.
Minot generated a substantial Project Blue Book record, including witness forms, logs, controller communications, maps and radarscope photographs.
The B‑52 reported an airborne radar return; multiple personnel reported visual observations; controllers discussed radar information during the event.
The surviving material does not, by itself, prove that every visual report and every radar return represented the same physical object.
This is precisely the kind of historical case where technical expertise can move the evidence forward rather than merely add another opinion.
We want corrections, additional primary records, radar expertise, atmospheric analysis and first‑person knowledge that can be documented.
It is compelling because the event generated intersecting streams of military evidence.

Blue Book proposed explanations for the separate components, but its own final report relied on several different possibilities rather than one demonstrated cause.
The enduring question is therefore narrower — and stronger:
Can the surviving timings, geometry and sensor records actually be made to fit those explanations?
Until that reconstruction is completed convincingly, Minot remains one of the most document-rich military UFO cases of the Blue Book era.
