A small record anchored by a 1909 Merthyr Mountain mystery-airship report — a sibling to Caerphilly within the wider 1909 wave, not the same event.
Merthyr Tydfil has 12 geographically validated reports. Its significance rests on its place in the 1909 Welsh mystery-airship wave, plus a 1983 triangle in the wider Night of the Triangles.
On 9 August 1909, an account told of a mystery airship — later retellings added a landed cigar and a figure. The contemporary language of the 1909 wave was closer to airship, lights and “scareship”: the landing-and-occupant details are later-retelling material. Merthyr’s report is distinct from the Caerphilly Mountain report of 18 May 1909 — a different date and place within the same national wave.
On 19 January 1983, a large triangle with white lights was reported at Abercanaid — part of the same night of triangle reports across South Wales.
