The strongest public resource for testing embellishment. His archive preserves the 1964 GEPA account and later versions side by side, showing that the core structured-object and blackout claims are already early.

Air France technical chief Edmond Campagnac described a brilliant green object crossing the city at twilight, disappearing behind hills, then returning as a larger metallic rugby-ball or fuselage-like body preceded by a detached green luminous mass. The first phase fits a meteor surprisingly well. The reported reappearance, controlled city pass and metallic-body description are the parts that make Tananarive difficult.
Campagnac and Air France colleagues see a fast green object descending from the east. Their immediate reaction is ordinary: meteor. It passes behind southern hills and they wait for an impact sound.
Instead of an impact, Campagnac says the phenomenon rises again from behind the hills, now larger, and heads back over the city.
The 1964 GEPA account already describes a very bright green lens leading a separate metallic, aluminum-like cigar/fuselage body, followed by intermittent orange sparks. Later versions add colour/detail variations, but the essential structured two-part form is already present by 1964.
Campagnac estimated very low altitude by comparison with the city’s hills and compared the metallic body’s scale to a large transport aircraft. Those are visual estimates, not instrumented measurements.
Edmond Campagnac was a former artillery officer, an École Polytechnique graduate, pilot/instructor and head of Air France technical services in Madagascar. His professional background makes his descriptive vocabulary unusually valuable for a 1954 civilian sighting.
But the evidential structure still matters. The detailed public account we can actually verify is not from August 1954. Campagnac’s article “Une observation exceptionnelle” appeared in Bulletin du GEPA no. 6 in 1964 — about ten years after the event — and was reprinted/quoted in later GEPA material before his much later COMETA testimony.
That means his testimony is strong as a consistent named direct-witness tradition, but weaker than a recovered 1954 report would be for exact timings, dimensions and sequence.

This is the closest traceable contemporary public source located so far. It does not preserve Campagnac’s detailed two-phase narrative and frustratingly places the Tananarive sighting “towards the end” of 1954.
The central dramatic details are already present: green descending ball; reappearance; green leading lens; separate metallic cigar/fuselage; orange sparks; silence; city lighting going out; estimated low altitude; and Father Coze’s role in collecting testimony.
Campagnac publicly repeats the case. A 1970 GEPA reprint says the blackout did not occur all at once but appeared to progress with the object.
Later investigators recover additional witnesses and more elaborate corroborative material. This improves the outer witness ring but must remain separate from the 1964 core because it was gathered about forty years after the event.
The key result of the competitor pass is precise: the metallic-body, green-lens, silence and blackout claims cannot reasonably be dismissed as COMETA-era inventions. They are already present in the 1964 account. The remaining vulnerability is the ten-year gap between event and first detailed source currently recovered.
Campagnac’s 1964 account says only that it was a Monday in August 1954; he did not claim to remember the exact date. Later Malagasy witness work and calendar memories converged on Monday, 16 August.
There is a real documentary wrinkle. The Malagasy newspaper Fandrosoam-Baovao on 21 January 1955 refers to the Tananarive sighting as having occurred “towards the end” of the previous year, after mentioning a Fort-Dauphin sighting in September. That wording does not sit comfortably with 16 August.
Later witnesses reportedly supported 16 August for personal/calendar reasons, while some COMETA reproductions also introduced a 14 August typo. The page therefore keeps 16 August 1954 as the best-supported working date, but no longer describes the chronology as fully settled.
The city-light failure is stronger than V1 allowed. Campagnac’s 1964 account already says the lighting went out as the object moved down Avenue de la Libération. A 1970 GEPA reprint adds his 1969 clarification that the blackout appeared gradual, progressing with the object rather than striking the whole city simultaneously.
That makes the electrical effect an early part of Campagnac’s testimony, not a COMETA-era embellishment. It still lacks the independent technical anchor we would want: no 1954 utility fault log, grid report or engineering investigation has been recovered publicly.
The zebu/cattle panic is weaker. I have not found it in the 1964/1970 Campagnac text verified in this pass. It appears prominently in later case summaries and reinvestigations, so it is retained only as later retrospective corroborative testimony, not alongside the city blackout as an equally early claim.

Green coloration is unsurprising in bright meteoric phenomena, and apparent low altitude is notoriously difficult to judge for an intense object against distant hills.
A perspective reconstruction can also make a single straight meteor path appear to change direction as observers relocate the luminous train against hills and city landmarks. That gives the meteor hypothesis real explanatory power for the first phase and possibly part of the apparent “return.”
That explanation becomes strained only if the later core details are accurate: the object reappearing from behind the hills, reversing course across the city, presenting a metallic fuselage/rugby-ball body with a detached green leading luminous mass, and remaining low enough for structured form to be perceived.
The evidential question is therefore not “meteor or UFO?” in the abstract. It is: how much of the second phase is supported by early-enough documentation to rule out a single misperceived bolide?
Campagnac’s 1964 account says that most passers-by around the Air France group also saw the initial ball. Later versions expand the scale dramatically — from “several hundred” to claims that thousands were interviewed or tens of thousands were in a position to observe it.
No recovered 1954 witness census or Father Coze survey survives publicly to validate those headline totals. The 1994 reinvestigation did recover a smaller number of named witnesses, which supports a genuine broader witness pool but not the giant numbers often repeated online.
The safest formulation is therefore mass public sighting / numerous witnesses, with Campagnac as the dominant detailed source. The page avoids converting later population estimates into a measured witness count.

This version separates the 1955 newspaper trace, 1964 Campagnac core, 1969/70 repetition, and 1994–COMETA reinvestigation so later corroboration never silently migrates backward into 1954.
Tananarive is strongest when its two phases are kept apart. A green fast-moving luminous body is not especially difficult to reconcile with a bolide. Campagnac’s later-described return — larger, lower, metallic and structurally distinct — is what resists that simple solution.
The problem is evidential rather than dramatic. The hard second-phase details are demonstrably present by 1964, which defeats the claim that they were invented for COMETA. But 1964 is still ten years after the event, and the closest contemporary newspaper trace is frustratingly vague.
The case therefore deserves neither dismissal nor embellishment. It deserves the missing archive.
