A blast of light turned night into day across the western United States. Eureka's street lights blinked out. Reports flooded NORAD. Decades later, the fireball had become a landed craft, a pursuit, and a secret crash near Las Vegas.

On the evening of 18 April 1962, an extraordinarily bright object tore across the western United States. Contemporary newspapers described a fireball bright enough to illuminate the landscape like daylight and an explosion near Eureka, Utah.
The event was real, dramatic and widely observed. NORAD received reports. Residents across multiple western states saw the flash. Around Eureka, witnesses heard explosive or roaring sounds and some initially wondered whether material had reached the ground.
The event also produced one detail that later became central to UFO retellings: street lights in Eureka briefly went out.
Years later, the story evolved. The fireball became a craft that landed near Eureka, remained on the ground, took off again, travelled toward Nevada and finally crashed near Las Vegas — where military personnel supposedly recovered the wreckage.
That later story is far harder to anchor to April 1962 documentation.
Reports come from a broad multi-state region. Contemporary descriptions repeatedly use meteor, fireball or exploding object language.
News reports place an intense burst roughly south of Eureka, Utah, bright enough to illuminate the surrounding country.
The intense flash activates photoelectric street-light controls in the same way sunrise would, temporarily switching lights off.
Residents and officials discuss whether meteor material reached the ground. The event is treated publicly as an astronomical fireball.
Later recovered Air Force paperwork refers to a probable meteor / bolide even while preserving some contradictory radar and witness material.
UFO writers add a landing near Eureka, prolonged power failure, radar pursuit into Nevada and a final crash near Las Vegas.
Later versions transform the Eureka lighting effect into one of the strongest “electromagnetic interference” elements in the case.
The better-supported contemporary explanation is much simpler: the fireball was so bright that photoelectric controls interpreted the flash as daylight and switched the street lights off momentarily.
Donald Menzel and Lyle Boyd later highlighted exactly this mechanism in The World of Flying Saucers.
That does not make every witness report from the night wrong. It does mean the blackout story should not be used as evidence that an unknown craft landed and disrupted Eureka's electrical system.
Project Blue Book and later NICAP compilations preserve references to radar tracking, changing course, apparent low altitude and reports reaching air-defense channels. One record-card summary even contains language suggesting an object “apparently landed” west of Eureka before ending with an astronomical explanation.
Those documents are why the case cannot simply be dismissed as a piece of folklore invented from nothing.
But they also have to be read as operational notes written while a mass fireball event was producing confused reports across a huge geographic area. Radar contacts, visual reports and a bright bolide can become conflated when investigators try to build one track from many observations.
The right question is whether a single non-meteor object can be demonstrated through contemporaneous geometry — not whether some 1962 paperwork used uncertain language while the event was unfolding.
The second column may contain pieces inspired by genuine ambiguous reports. But as a complete crash-retrieval sequence, it is not established by the contemporary newspaper record.
NICAP's archival index points to Air Force material describing radar contacts around the event, including material from Nellis.
This is the strongest area for future reinvestigation because radar can, in principle, separate an ordinary meteor trajectory from a controlled low-altitude object.
But the documents need a full sensor-by-sensor reconstruction: station, time base, azimuth, elevation, range, track continuity and whether separate contacts were mistakenly joined into one narrative.
Until that is done, “tracked by radar” should not be converted into “radar proved a landed craft escaped Utah and crashed near Las Vegas.”
Later researchers have pointed to low-altitude estimates, aircraft reports and radar descriptions that seem difficult to fit neatly into a high-altitude meteor track.
Those contradictions deserve examination. Human range estimates at night can be poor, but radar and aviation reports are potentially testable.
The productive approach is therefore not to resurrect the whole Las Vegas crash story by default. It is to isolate each anomalous 1962 report and ask whether it belongs to the same event, a separate aircraft/contact, or a misinterpreted aspect of the fireball.
