The Lake Michigan L-1011 Object

At 37,000 feet over Lake Michigan, a veteran TWA captain saw a silver object appear ahead and above his TriStar. It rolled as it approached, exposing a dark-edged side with what looked like six evenly spaced portholes.

The case in one minute

A professional pilot saw structure — but structure without range is still difficult evidence.

On the afternoon of 4 July 1981, Captain Philip Schultz was flying a TWA Lockheed L-1011 TriStar eastbound from San Francisco to New York. The aircraft was cruising on autopilot at about 37,000 feet over south-central Lake Michigan.

Schultz later told aviation researcher Richard F. Haines that a large metallic-looking object suddenly appeared ahead and to the left, descending into view from above the aircraft.

As it approached, Schultz said the object rolled and exposed its side. He described a silver, disc-like body with six evenly spaced black circular features around the rim and another dark circular area on the underside.

For a few seconds, Schultz believed the object might collide with the L-1011.

Then it curved away and disappeared. The entire close visual sequence lasted only seconds.

The witness

Pilot expertise adds value — but it cannot manufacture distance.

Schultz's aviation background makes his description important because he was trained to judge aircraft attitude, closure, relative motion and collision risk.

But even experienced pilots can struggle to estimate the size, range and speed of an unfamiliar object when there is no known reference scale.

That limitation becomes critical here. Much of the case's apparently extreme performance depends on how close the object actually was. If the range estimate is wrong, calculations of size, velocity and acceleration move with it.

The strongest responsible statement is therefore that Schultz reported a structured metallic-looking object whose apparent motion alarmed him — not that its speed or acceleration was instrumentally proven.

What did the rest of the cockpit see?

The public record is not as cleanly multi-witness as the headline suggests.

Other cockpit personnel

Later summaries say the first officer saw at least a bright flash or part of the encounter, while the flight engineer's position limited his view. The complete independent statements are not presently in hand.

Until the other crew members' original accounts are recovered, Schultz remains the principal evidential witness.

Richard Haines's reconstruction

The case did not stop with a newspaper-style interview.

Haines reconstructed the event with Schultz in an L-1011 cockpit, using the pilot's remembered eye position and cockpit windows to estimate apparent angular size, path and orientation.

Haines published the case in a two-part 1982 article, Commercial Jet Crew Sights Unidentified Object, and later cited it in his aviation-safety work.

Rice University's Woodson Research Center now preserves Haines's ufology archive, including 1981 audio material specifically catalogued under Schultz's Lake Michigan case.

That archival survival is valuable because it gives future researchers a route back toward the investigator's working material rather than forcing them to rely only on later summaries.

The hypnosis issue

One archived session happened months after the sighting.

Rice's catalogue identifies a 20 November 1981 hypnosis session involving Schultz.

That material should be treated cautiously. Hypnosis can increase confidence and detail without reliably increasing factual accuracy, and it can introduce suggestion or memory reconstruction.

The core case should therefore stand or fall on Schultz's ordinary conscious recollection, written report and cockpit reconstruction — not on any extra detail produced under hypnosis.

Conventional routes

Could an ordinary aircraft or optical effect look this strange?

Another aircraft at a poorly estimated range remains an obvious test candidate, especially if banking or reflecting sunlight. Glare, reflection or a brief optical effect can also create sudden flashes and ambiguous form.

A balloon is harder to reconcile with the reported structured side profile and apparent rapid curved motion, but it cannot be excluded from testimony alone without range and wind data.

The “portholes” themselves also require caution. Dark circular-looking features on a bright reflective body might be real structural openings, painted markings, shadows or contrast effects.

No mundane explanation presently reproduces the complete description with confidence. But the missing range data prevent the dramatic performance estimates from being treated as measurements.

What the case does show

A veteran airline captain reported a structured object close enough to trigger collision concern.

That is already significant without adding numbers the evidence cannot securely support.

The case's strength comes from the witness, the daylight geometry, the detailed description and Haines's later reconstruction. Its weakness comes from the absence of hard range data, radar, photographs and independent first-generation crew documentation.

It is exactly the sort of aviation case where the testimony deserves serious attention — and where testimony alone should not be converted into impossible performance.

  • Separate ordinary interviews from the later hypnosis session.
  • Identify and interview or locate statements from the first officer and flight engineer.
  • Search TWA corporate records for Flight 842 and any safety or irregularity report.
  • Search FAA/ATC archives for the 4 July 1981 route and controller records.
  • Reconstruct nearby civil and military traffic from the exact encounter time.
  • Recalculate size and speed across multiple possible ranges rather than assuming one distance.
