The film was real. The radar was real. They were never one perfectly fused event.
Kaikōura earned its reputation honestly: professional aircrew, air-traffic radar, aircraft radar, live audio and authentic 16 mm film. But the famous case is a cluster of different nights and different sensor combinations. The strongest filmed light overlapped with the Argosy's own weather radar — not with a clean simultaneous lock from every ground radar.

THE FIRST CORRECTION
Kaikōura is not one UFO tracked and filmed continuously for days.
The television crew came because the earlier sightings had already become news. The famous film is follow-up documentation, not film of the original 20–21 December event.
20–21 DECEMBER
The original case already had genuine radar-visual depth.
SAFE Air Argosy crews reported unusual coastal lights while Wellington ATC radar was also seeing unusual returns during portions of the same operational period. In some passages, radar information prompted crews to look in particular directions, and aircraft radar also entered the story.
That is real multi-sensor evidence.
What the surviving official record does not establish is one uninterrupted target continuously matched by crew vision, Wellington radar and aircraft radar for the whole night.

30–31 DECEMBER · THE PLANNED TV FLIGHT
The camera was there on purpose.
Reporter Quentin Fogarty arranged a follow-up flight aboard a SAFE Air Argosy after publicity from the first sightings. Captain Bill Startup and First Officer Bob Guard flew the aircraft. David Crockett operated the 16 mm camera, with Ngaire Crockett recording sound on the southbound leg. Dennis Grant joined the return flight after Christchurch.
That matters because the film is not accidental independent corroboration of the first cluster. It is a deliberately arranged attempt to investigate whether the phenomenon would recur.
SOUTHBOUND
Radar and visual activity overlapped — but did not pair neatly.
On the Wellington-to-Christchurch leg, several lights were reported around the Kaikōura coast while Wellington radar also reported contacts.
The official chronology preserves mismatches: radar targets could appear behind the Argosy without a visible counterpart after the aircraft turned; visible lights could not always be matched to one radar contact; and target counts and positions changed.
THE RETURN FLIGHT
This is the sequence that made Kaikōura famous.
After Christchurch, witnesses saw and Crockett filmed a prolonged bright light off the Argosy. At the same time, the aircraft's own weather radar — reportedly operating in ground-mapping mode — displayed a return whose range changed as the aircraft manoeuvred.
That is a genuinely interesting airborne visual + film + aircraft-radar combination.
But Captain Startup's official account did not establish that the light and radar return were definitely the same target. Christchurch radar reportedly saw no corresponding target, and Wellington supplied no clean matching unidentified ground-radar contact during the key roughly twenty-minute filmed sequence.
Film + aircraft radar overlap is supported. “Aircraft radar + Christchurch + Wellington all confirmed the filmed object” is not.
RADAR SIZE
A large weather-radar return did not measure a giant craft.
Weather-radar echo size depends on beam width, range, gain, reflectivity, operating mode, ground clutter, target geometry and display resolution.
So descriptions of the return as several times larger than another echo cannot be translated directly into a physical object diameter.

THE FILM ITSELF
Authentic footage. Compromised silhouette.
David Crockett's 16 mm film is genuine contemporaneous footage. The issue is not fabrication.
DSIR / Physics and Engineering Laboratory personnel tested Argosy windows and found significant optical defects, including coma, astigmatism and distortion. The window used for much of the photography was specifically examined.
The footage is an authentic evidential artefact from the case.
Aircraft glazing can stretch, flare and reshape bright point sources before the image reaches the camera.
Optical distortion does not mean hoax. It means apparent shape, size, elongation and colour structure cannot automatically be read as faithful external geometry.
3 JANUARY 1979
A separate ground film removed the Argosy-window problem — but not every uncertainty.
A TV1 crew later filmed another bright light from the ground near Clarence River. Because there was no aircraft glazing in the optical path, DSIR treated the footage as more analytically interesting in that respect.
But the ground film still contained unresolved aberrations and did not automatically establish the identity, range or physical nature of the source.

THE RADAR ENVIRONMENT
Real returns existed — and so did reasons to distrust some of them.
The official inquiry examined Wellington ATC returns, aircraft weather-radar indications, spurious echoes, propagation effects, radar-system behaviour and later observational checks.
A later DSIR watch reportedly produced large Wellington radar returns without corresponding visible objects. That materially strengthens anomalous-propagation or radar-artifact explanations for at least part of the record.
It does not prove every December radar contact was false.
The radar evidence is genuine but heterogeneous.
THE OFFICIAL EXPLANATION
Not “squid boats solved it.” Not “nothing conventional worked.”
New Zealand investigators favoured a multi-cause conventional model that included anomalous propagation, Venus and other astronomical sources, fishing and shipping lights, coastal and vehicle lights, radar effects and aircraft-window optics.
The broad official position was that most observations could plausibly be explained by natural or conventional effects, while some details remained inconclusive or disputed.
MACCABEE'S NUMBERS
Important analysis — not direct measurements.
Bruce Maccabee treated parts of the film as evidence of an intense luminous source and derived quantitative estimates of brightness and physical scale.
Those calculations depend on assumptions about focal length, distance, radar/visual identity, camera movement, window effects and image interpretation. They remain part of the technical debate, but they should not be presented as measured craft dimensions.
THE REAL MYSTERY
Kaikōura survives best when the evidence is allowed to be messy.
Professional aircrew saw unusual lights. Air-traffic controllers reported unusual radar returns. Aircraft weather radar produced reported returns. A television cameraman captured authentic 16 mm film. A separate ground crew filmed another light days later.
The streams overlap — but never perfectly.
Some lights may have been astronomical or coastal. Some may have been fishing vessels. Some radar returns may have been propagation. Some film shapes were materially altered by aircraft-window optics.
And yet a number of observations remain difficult to fit neatly into one mundane explanation.
The better question is: what mixture of external lights, radar anomalies, atmospheric effects and genuinely unidentified observations created such a dense burst of evidence around Kaikōura in late 1978?
