The missing number is distance.

Hannah McRoberts photographed a mountain and cloud. Nobody saw a UFO. The disc appeared only after the film was processed — and the original negative later received unusually serious analysis.

This was not a sighting.

Hannah McRoberts was travelling with her husband and daughter on Vancouver Island. A cloud beside a mountain peak looked amusingly like steam from a volcano, so she took a photograph.

No one pointed at a disc. No one watched anything move. No one heard a sound. The object became part of the story only when the processed photographs came back.

The image preserves appearance. It does not preserve behaviour. There is no direct evidence here for hovering, speed, acceleration, trajectory, silence or duration.

He had the kind of source access most UFO-photo analysts never get.

Richard F. Haines examined the original 35 mm colour negative, the actual camera, the original site and the McRoberts family. His analysis included micro-densitometry, computer enhancement, checks for support-thread effects, atmospheric disturbance, camera or emulsion artefacts and a site reconstruction.

That is a genuine provenance strength. He was not working from a newspaper clipping or a web JPEG.

But strong access is not the same thing as object identification.

WHAT HIS TESTS SUPPORT

A real image feature on the negative

Haines argued that the photographed form was consistent with a three-dimensional object rather than the specific flat, emulsion, camera and support-thread artefacts he tested.

CAMERA
1.3° is an angle, not a diameter.
To turn angular width into physical width, you need the missing distance.

A lower bound, not a measured range.

Haines' published conclusion was that the image appeared consistent with a three-dimensional object at a distance of at least about 30 feet from the camera.

That does not mean the object was 30 ft away. It does not place it near the mountain. It does not tell us its physical diameter.

It means Haines believed certain very-near-camera artefact mechanisms were inconsistent with the image and proposed a lower distance boundary.

At 30 feet, the “UFO” could be only eight inches wide.

The commonly reported angular width is around 1.3°. Once simple geometry is applied, the reason this case remains unresolved becomes obvious.

The same angular image can represent a small nearby object or a much larger distant object. The photograph itself does not choose between those ranges.

It looks like a depth reference. It isn't.

The eye naturally places the disc near the mountain because both appear in the same frame. But the object does not pass behind the ridge, cross in front of a known-distance feature, cast a measurable shadow or produce parallax.

The mountain is background context. It cannot establish that the object was near the peak or usefully constrain its physical size.

A small nearby object is still in the game.

WHY IT FITS

Single frame, no eyewitness

At the 30-ft lower boundary, an object of roughly the photographed angular width could be only several inches across. A small thrown disc, lid, hubcap, model or other mundane object is therefore physically compatible with the scale.

WHY IT ISN'T SOLVED

No matching object or throw was demonstrated

No exact object, trajectory, accomplice, support thread, launcher or confession has been established. The hypothesis is serious — not proven.

A proper modern test would recreate the scene with equivalent optics and known-distance objects. That is more useful than arguing from the silhouette alone.

Genuine negative does not mean genuine spacecraft.

The original negative is one of the strongest parts of the case. It establishes that the object is not merely something introduced in a later print or magazine reproduction.

But the film-roll context is not perfect. The relevant negative survived and was examined, while the complete roll was not preserved as one untouched evidential strip in the material recovered so far.

Correct conclusion: original negative examined. Overstatement: unbroken end-to-end chain of custody proves an extraordinary craft.

One sharp photograph. One missing dimension.

The image is real on the negative. Haines had unusually good access. The specific photographic tricks he tested were not demonstrated.

But nobody saw the object, so there is no behaviour to reconstruct. And the photograph contains no reliable depth cue capable of converting its 1.3° angular width into a known physical size.

That leaves the case balanced on one number the image cannot supply: distance.

Follow the negative.
