The radar returns looked impossible.

A B-29 crew watched fast-moving targets cross their airborne radar, computed apparent speeds in the thousands of miles per hour, and reported blue-white flashes outside. Then the argument began over whether anything physical had been there at all.

This case begins with an Air Intelligence report, not a paperback retelling.

James McDonald identified the central military document as Air Intelligence Information Report No. IR-86-52, filed from Randolph Air Force Base by Maj. J. R. Sheffield, Wing Operations Officer of the 3510th Flying Training Wing.

The archived case was described as containing an event summary, a sightings map, the original TWX and signed statements from officers and enlisted men. Names in that documentary record include Norman Karas, William Naumann, Robert Eckert, B. R. Purcell and William De Rause.

Donald Keyhoe's famous retelling uses a different cast of names and dramatic dialogue. That popular version is not the signed military witness record.

Multiple crewmen. One airborne radar system.

The B-29's returns were visible on multiple repeater displays aboard the aircraft. That matters because several crewmen could see what the same radar system was displaying.

It does not mean three independent radar stations or three independent transmitters tracked the targets from separate locations.

The first anomalous group appeared while the crew had already called for a calibration check. The check followed, and later groups appeared afterward. So calibration uncertainty affects the opening phase but does not erase the entire sequence.

5,240 mph was calculated. It was not printed on the radar.

McDonald's reconstruction says the radar scanned at about 25 revolutions per minute. The first returns appeared to advance roughly five miles per sweep, and crewmen used scope displacement and stopwatch timing to calculate an apparent speed around 5,000–5,240 mph.

Those figures become physical velocities only if changing radar blips represent continuous physical targets moving through space. That assumption is exactly where the conventional explanation attacks the case.

The radar showed convergence. The rest was interpretation.

Several smaller returns appeared to converge or merge, after which a larger curved return remained and moved rapidly off the scope.

Keyhoe later interpreted that sequence as smaller saucers rendezvousing with or entering a “mother ship.” Radar does not establish that. Returns can overlap, merge, split, change shape or be affected by propagation conditions.

Supported: apparent convergence/merging of radar returns. Not supported as fact: physical docking between craft.

VISUAL EVIDENCE

Blue-white flashes

Crewmen reported brief flashes or streaks, including sightings in directions associated with some radar calls. One account describes two blue-white flashes lasting about three seconds.

There was visual corroboration — but it was limited.

The crew did not resolve structured saucers. They reported brief blue-white flashes or streaks, including flashes moving front-to-rear beneath the wing.

That gives the case a genuine radar-visual layer. But it does not establish a one-to-one match between every blip and every flash, and it does not visually measure the thousands-of-miles-per-hour speed figures.

What if the “targets” were the atmosphere?

In the Condon Report, Gordon Thayer used meteorological data showing a strong super-refractive layer and sharp inversion near the surface — conditions capable of ducting radar energy.

His model proposed that radar energy entered the duct and leaked or re-entered in ways that created changing apparent targets. Such anomalous-propagation artifacts can appear to move at enormous speeds even though no object is physically travelling that fast.

For the blue-white visual flashes, Thayer proposed Geminid meteors.

Thayer's case

Documented super-refraction provides a mechanism for extreme apparent radar motion; meteors could account for at least some of the visual flashes.

McDonald's objection

He argued that Thayer misread the coastline/aircraft chronology, that the geometry was not straightforward, and that radar-associated visual calls made a simple ducting dismissal incomplete.

Neither side has the decisive evidence anymore.

McDonald did not recover raw radar data proving physical craft. His argument was narrower: Thayer's proposed propagation geometry did not cleanly account for the complete documented sequence.

Thayer, meanwhile, supplied a physically plausible atmospheric mechanism rooted in real meteorological conditions — but his interpretation depends on reconstructing radar propagation and timing from records rather than replaying the original scope data.

The missing evidence is decisive: original raw radar display data, timing worksheets, exact range-scale records and synchronized radar/visual timestamps.

Physical targets — or one of the best radar illusions of the UFO era?

The most sensational version says three radars tracked saucers at 5,240 mph before they docked with a mother ship and accelerated past 9,000 mph.

That version does not survive the documentary record.

The stronger case is more interesting: multiple military crewmen watched anomalous returns on the same airborne radar system; later groups persisted after a calibration check; crewmen computed extraordinary apparent speeds from sweep-to-sweep motion; brief blue-white flashes were also reported; and an identifiable Air Intelligence report preserved the event for analysis.

Thayer built a serious atmospheric explanation. McDonald found serious problems with it. Without the raw radar record, the dispute remains open.
