The Greifswald Lights

One of Europe's most spectacular UFO films is unquestionably real footage. The harder question is what those cameras actually captured.

THE FOOTAGE IS NOT THE PROBLEM

Real cameras. Real lights. A very hard identification fight.

On the evening of 24 August 1990, people around Greifswald and Lubmin turned cameras toward the Baltic and recorded groups of brilliant lights hanging above the horizon. The images survive from more than one vantage point. They are not a single anonymous clip, and they are not a modern recreation.

That makes Greifswald unusual. The argument is not whether something luminous was there. The argument is whether the formation was extraordinary at all. German sceptical investigators built a detailed case for military illumination flares used as practice targets; MUFON-CES investigators answered with photogrammetry, witness testimony and objections to the flare chronology.

The result is a case where spectacular imagery and a strong conventional mechanism coexist — and where the missing military paperwork matters more than another dramatic retelling.

THE EVENING

Two formations over the Baltic.

Bright formations appear.

Witnesses around the Greifswalder Bodden report luminous spheres above the Baltic. One brighter group is described as ring-like; another forms a Y-like pattern.

Multiple cameras record the lights.

Independent videos and photographs give the case unusually strong media coverage for 1990 and permit comparison between different viewpoints.

A brief flash is filmed near the formation.

Flare advocates interpret this kind of flash as consistent with military firing activity. Anomalous interpretations treat it as part of the unexplained sequence.

Lights extinguish one by one.

The gradual fading pattern is one of the strongest visual points in favour of burning illumination.

Some witnesses report a reappearance.

Later testimony describes a similar formation returning slightly displaced. Whether this was a new flare sequence or the same phenomenon is one of the dispute points.

THE VISUAL RECORD

A case that can be watched, not merely retold.

The surviving imagery shows bright, unresolved light sources rather than detailed structured craft. That point matters. The cameras establish the presence, arrangement and changing brightness of luminous objects; they do not reveal windows, hulls, occupants or a measurable technological surface.

THE FLARE CASE

Why military illumination is such a serious match.

Parachute illumination flares can look astonishing from a distance. Once deployed high over water they may appear almost stationary, drift slowly with the air mass, maintain rough formations and then fade individually as their burn ends. A sequence of launches can also create the impression that a formation has vanished and then re-formed nearby.

German sceptical investigators cited former military personnel and local maritime witnesses who said the Greifswald display resembled illumination used in Baltic training. One former NVA officer, Dr Lüder Stock, described rocket-launched luminous targets descending beneath large parachutes. Other local witnesses later said they had seen comparable military lights before.

The one-by-one extinction pattern and the location near a military firing area are powerful points in this explanation's favour.

WHY THE ARGUMENT DIDN'T END

The flare explanation is strong — but the documentary lock is missing.

The flare case

The objections

  • No recovered firing log names the unit, munition and launch times for 24 August.
  • MUFON-CES argued its multi-view geometry did not fit the proposed flare locations.
  • Some maritime witnesses familiar with target flares said the display looked different.
  • Reported reappearance and duration remain points of contention.

The strongest public version of the flare theory is therefore a mechanistically persuasive identification, not a fully documented chain from launcher to light. That is an important distinction: a plausible explanation can be very strong without being proven by the missing operations record.

THE PHOTOGRAMMETRY FIGHT

Range changes everything.

MUFON-CES analysts attempted to triangulate the lights using multiple films and camera positions. Their reconstruction placed the formations tens of kilometres away and produced physical-size and brightness estimates that they argued were difficult to reconcile with ordinary illumination.

Those calculations are interesting precisely because range is normally the fatal weakness in night-light UFO cases. But the numbers are model-dependent: camera locations, angular measurements, synchronisation and identifying the same light across different films all have to be correct. The public page should therefore treat the resulting size estimates as analytical reconstructions, not measurements made directly on the objects.

For Greifswald, the geometry is not decoration. It is where the competing explanations can actually be tested.

WHAT REMAINS

The missing record is more important than the brightest frame.

Which military unit, if any, fired illumination that night?A dated operations or firing log matching time, location and munition would transform the conventional case.
Can all recorded lights be tied to one flare sequence?The possibility that more than one ordinary source was present should remain open.
How secure is the multi-camera triangulation?Exact camera positions, clocks and original-generation tapes are needed to reproduce it independently.
What explains the reported reappearance?A second launch sequence is an obvious prosaic possibility, but it should be demonstrated rather than assumed.
Does the nuclear-plant proximity matter?The plant is real location context; the current evidence does not establish that the lights were interacting with or monitoring it.
THE READER TEST

How much proof should an identification require?

Greifswald is a useful stress test because both sides have something substantial: real multi-camera evidence on one side, and a convincing known mechanism on the other.

  1. If the visual behaviour closely matches parachute flares, do you need the actual firing log before accepting that explanation?
  2. If the triangulation is reproducible and conflicts with the proposed flare zone, how much should that weaken the conventional case?
  3. Does a later reappearance require one persistent object, or can repeated launches explain it more simply?
  4. What evidence would you demand before linking the event to the nearby nuclear site?
