Misidentification
Dark distant figures in a rural landscape can be misread, particularly when size and distance are uncertain.
CUSSAC, CANTAL, FRANCE · 29 AUGUST 1967
François Delpeuch, 13, and his nine-year-old sister Anne-Marie said they encountered four small dark figures beside a spherical object while tending cattle outside Cussac. Their story reached family, gendarmes and the press within days — giving this extraordinary occupant case an unusually early documentary trail.
THE REAL CASE
On the morning of 29 August 1967, François and Anne-Marie Delpeuch were tending cattle near Cussac in the Cantal region of central France.
The children said they noticed several small black figures near a spherical or rounded object in a field.
The encounter became dramatic when the figures appeared to move toward the object and the sphere departed.
Their father was told quickly, local gendarmes became involved, and the regional press reported the incident within days.
That rapid chain matters. It does not prove the figures were non-human, but it limits how much of the core story can be dismissed as a legend assembled decades later.
THE ENCOUNTER
François and Anne-Marie said the figures were small, dark or black in appearance and close to a spherical object.
The precise descriptions vary in later retellings, which is why the earliest statements matter more than polished reconstructions produced years afterward.
What remains consistent in the case tradition is the same basic structure: multiple small figures, a nearby spherical object, and a rapid departure.
The extraordinary content is clear. The evidential question is how much of the detail can be traced back to the first reports.
THE DEPARTURE
The children described the figures as converging on the object before it rose or departed.
Later accounts include the impression that some of the figures entered or were drawn into the sphere in unusual ways.
Those details are among the most memorable parts of the case — and among the parts that most need comparison against the original statements.
Without the first gendarmerie record in hand, the safest treatment is to preserve the broad departure sequence while refusing to turn later narrative detail into primary evidence.
ODour AND GROUND EFFECTS
Later investigations reported an unusual odour at or near the scene and observations involving the grass or ground where the object had allegedly been.
These details are often promoted as physical evidence.
That goes too far unless the original documentation shows exactly who observed the effect, when they observed it, what was measured and whether it was photographed or sampled.
For this page, odour and grass effects remain reported scene observations — not authenticated physical trace evidence.
THE EARLY PAPER TRAIL
THE FRENCH OFFICIAL CONTEXT
France eventually developed one of the world's longest-running official programmes for studying unusual aerospace reports, now represented by GEIPAN within CNES.
Cussac has been revisited within that wider French investigative tradition and remains a recognised historical case.
That gives researchers access to a more serious official context than many entity stories receive.
Official study means the case was examined. It does not mean the French government certified four non-human occupants.

Dark distant figures in a rural landscape can be misread, particularly when size and distance are uncertain.
Aircraft or helicopter explanations have been proposed and require exact local traffic and geometry.
Without known references, small nearby objects and larger distant objects can be confused.
Repeated interviewing can sharpen and sometimes reshape childhood memories.
The case was reported quickly, reducing the amount of time available for decades-long legend formation before the core story appeared.
The object, figures, witnesses and terrain need to be reconstructed from first-generation records.
WHAT HOLDS UP
François and Anne-Marie Delpeuch are central to the record.
The incident reached local authorities and the press within days.
Police involvement is part of the near-contemporary history, though the original report still needs direct retrieval.
French civilian and official-study traditions revisited the case.
Odour and grass effects are reported but not securely documented here as measured trace evidence.
No authenticated photograph of the sphere or figures exists.
WHAT REMAINS
Cussac is not strong because the story is spectacular. Plenty of spectacular stories are poorly sourced.
It is strong because something unusual was reported by two children and entered a police-and-press chain quickly enough to leave a historical footprint.
The unresolved issue is whether the first-generation documents support the full later narrative — or a smaller, stranger core.
The next breakthrough in Cussac is not another reconstruction. It is the original gendarmerie file.
