Jimmy Carter's Leary, Georgia Sighting

Future U.S. president Jimmy Carter and a group of Lions Club members watched a bright, color-changing light in the western sky for roughly ten minutes. Carter filed a signed questionnaire in 1973; later records moved the event from his remembered October 1969 date to 6 January 1969.

Why This Case Matters

The witness is exceptionally prominent and the primary report survives, but this is also a strong identification case because the corrected date aligns with Venus and, more specifically, a documented high-altitude barium-cloud experiment from Eglin AFB.

Chronology

  • 06 Jan 1969 Lions Club meeting/date later established
  • ~19:15 sighting reported
  • Sep 1973 Carter completes signed International UFO Bureau form but writes Oct 1969
  • 1976–77 case becomes national news
  • later researchers test Venus and Eglin chemical-cloud explanations

The Witnesses

Jimmy Carterprincipal named witness
roughly 10–12 Lions Club members reportedly present, though independent statements are sparse
Fred Hart later recalled a distant blue light but not an extraordinary event.

Evidence

The following evidence types are documented for this case:

Evidencesigned 1973 witness report
Evidencemultiple-witness claim
Evidencelater witness recollection
Evidenceastronomical and rocket-experiment records

Conventional explanations: Venus was bright in the relevant western sky. A documented Eglin AFB barium release on 6 January 1969 around 19:35 EST is an even more specific candidate: direction, elevation and reported blue/red luminous appearance are broadly consistent, though the reported times are not identical.
