Ron Sullivan was driving through central Victoria when a low luminous object appeared beside the road. Then his Ford Falcon’s headlights seemed to swing thirty to forty-five degrees toward it, momentarily fail, and return. Two days later a young driver died at the same tree Sullivan had almost hit.
Burkes Flat is memorable because the central anomaly is not a stalled engine or a dead radio. Sullivan said the beams themselves appeared to swing sideways toward the object in the paddock.
The later record gives us something unusually valuable: James E. McDonald interviewed Sullivan directly in July 1967 and the audio survives. That does not make the event proven, but it means the witness can be heard describing the effect himself rather than only through decades of retelling.
The case also acquired a reported ground trace and, two nights later, a fatal road accident at the same locality. Those pieces must be separated carefully. Gary Taylor’s death is part of the history of why Sullivan came forward; it is not independent proof of a UFO.
Most later case chronologies place Sullivan's encounter on 4 April 1966. But in James McDonald's 1967 interview, Sullivan gave the date as 7 April, around 8:30 p.m.
That discrepancy matters because 7 April 1966 was Easter Thursday — exactly the period when the Mount Tarrengower lookout tower was traditionally decorated and illuminated for local Easter festivities.
The editorial rule is therefore simple: do not silently resolve the date. Preserve both source traditions and show why the difference materially changes the strength of the tower hypothesis.
Sullivan, a steel-construction businessman, was driving a 1965 Ford Falcon along the Dunolly–St Arnaud road near Burkes Flat at about 60 mph. The sky was clear, moonless and calm.
Off to his right he noticed a light in a paddock. His first interpretation was ordinary: a tractor working at night. As the distance closed, the light became harder to fit to that explanation.
He described a white phosphorescent oval near ground level. A second oval appeared above it and the display opened into a cone-like form roughly twenty to thirty feet high. Within it were vertical shafts or tubes of coloured light — red, blue, indigo, purple and other spectral colours — moving between the upper and lower sections.
Sullivan sees a low light to his right and initially interprets it as night ploughing.

The beams appear to veer toward the paddock, briefly cut out, return still angled, then snap back to normal.
A near-contemporary letter Sullivan sent to the Victorian Flying Saucer Research Society is one of the strongest controls on later story growth. In that early account he already describes the core elements that made Burkes Flat famous: the headlights appearing to bend to the right, coloured gaseous-looking illumination, tube-like shafts of light and a bright phosphorescent glow near ground level.
That matters because those details are not all products of later television or ufology retellings. They were present close to the event.
In McDonald’s interview, Sullivan was explicit that the effect was difficult to describe. He estimated the beams veered roughly thirty to forty-five degrees to the right. For a moment the headlights went out, then came back still displaced before returning to normal.
He also described a brief period of mental fog or difficulty thinking clearly during the encounter. That belongs in the physiological/cognitive lane only: it is a reported effect, not evidence of “mind control.”
The perceptual trap is obvious: Sullivan was driving at speed, watching a strange light off-axis, and correcting his steering at the same time. A brief road-position error could make a headlight beam appear displaced across a fence or paddock.
But Sullivan’s own interpretation was different. He thought the light itself had been affected — “bent” toward the object by some force. That conclusion was never instrumentally verified.
Sullivan perceived the road illumination moving sharply right.
He also recalled a brief loss of the headlights before they returned.
The proposed force was Sullivan’s interpretation, not a measured field effect.
After Sullivan’s account became known, a shallow circular depression was reported in the freshly ploughed paddock roughly aligned with where he had seen the light. Later specialist reconstructions describe the soil as cleanly scooped or rippled, with little or no thrown debris and no obvious human or animal tracks leading through the immediate mark.
The dimensions, however, conflict. One later account gives a little over three feet across and only a few inches deep. Sullivan’s own interview tradition gives roughly four to five feet across and seven to eight inches deep.
The landowner was reported to have said the mark was not present when the field was last worked. Sergeant Suttie of Maryborough is among the officers later associated with recording or inspecting the depression. That makes the trace more concrete, but it still does not identify what caused it. A full contemporary photograph/measurement package has not been recovered in this build.

On 6 April 1966, nineteen-year-old Gary Taylor was killed when his car left the road near the same spot and struck the tree Sullivan had nearly hit while correcting his steering.
The coincidence is disturbing and historically important. It reportedly helped persuade Sullivan to tell police and the press what he had seen.
But Taylor did not report a UFO before his death. The accident therefore cannot be treated as independent corroboration of Sullivan’s encounter.
A later caller to UFO researchers claimed he had been driving hundreds of metres behind Taylor, saw strange lights in the adjacent field and turned off because he was frightened. That caller was unidentified and apparently never converted into a fully documented witness statement. Treat it as a lead, not a second witness.
Years later, a headlight recovered from Taylor’s crashed car was examined by Dr Geoff Stevens, then associated with the Australian Atomic Energy Commission at Lucas Heights. The magnetic lines of force were traced across it.
If the headlight had been exposed to a strong external magnetic field, a coherent alignment might have been expected. Instead, the pattern was relatively random.
That is a negative result for the specific magnetic-UFO hypothesis. It does not explain Sullivan’s perceived headlight effect, and because the tested headlight came from Taylor’s car rather than Sullivan’s, it does not directly test Sullivan’s vehicle either.
American atmospheric physicist James E. McDonald interviewed Sullivan during his 1967 Australian fact-finding trip. The surviving recording is one of the strongest pieces of the Burkes Flat archive.
Sullivan told McDonald that neither the Royal Australian Air Force nor the Department of Civil Aviation had investigated his sighting. The work had instead been done by local police and civilian UFO researchers.
That matters because later retellings sometimes give old UFO cases an “official investigation” aura they never had. Burkes Flat is better when the record remains modest: named witness, contemporary press, local investigation, later scientific interviewer.
Later reconstructions do not place every account cleanly on the same road geometry. Sullivan used different road/location descriptions in different tellings, and modern map work has questioned whether the route described to McDonald naturally passes the tree associated with Gary Taylor's crash.
This matters because the Burkes Flat countercase depends heavily on sightline. If the exact road position changes, the apparent bearing to Mount Tarrengower changes too.
The general geographic lane consistently associated with the encounter.
Different retellings do not map perfectly onto one road line.
Do not assume the crash tree and UFO sightline are exactly the same location without reconstruction.
The tower hypothesis rises or falls partly on the actual azimuth from Sullivan's car.
Show road, crash site, reported UFO field and tower as separate pins rather than one blended “same spot.”
Until original maps/notes are reconciled, keep the exact encounter point approximate.
The strongest modern conventional reconstruction identifies the Mount Tarrengower lookout tower near Maldon. The steel tower is about twenty metres high and is decorated with lights around the Easter fair period. Seen at distance across flat country, its lit frame could plausibly resemble an inverted cone with vertical coloured elements.
This is a serious explanation because it names a real object and a real viewing geometry. It is not a demonstrated identification. The reconstruction depends on the tower actually being lit that night, and that has not been securely established in the public record.
It also does not independently explain Sullivan’s momentary headlight blackout/sideways beam perception or the reported fresh depression in the paddock.

Recover Sullivan’s precise road position, direction and the object azimuth from original maps/interviews.

Recover the earliest police/press images and measurements of the depression.
Recover any contemporary inspection or repair record for the actual witness vehicle.
