Jupiter explains part of the night. Not all of it.

Most of the prolonged sighting may have been a bright planet. But three women reported something very different over the Beverly High School athletic field — a close, silent object passing directly overhead.

Do not force the whole night into one object.

Eleven-year-old Nancy Modugno first alerted the adults to unusual lights near Beverly High School. The event then developed into a longer observation involving her family, three adult women, neighbours and responding police.

The case becomes clearer when those observations are separated rather than blended together.

DISTANT / PROLONGED PHASE

Bright lights, colour changes, apparent motion.

The Condon analysis found Jupiter a strong fit for much of this part of the observation. Scintillation and autokinesis can make a bright planet change colour and appear to move.

CLOSE OVERHEAD PHASE

A very different claim.

Three women reported one light approaching the athletic field and passing directly overhead, with a solid-looking underside and an estimated altitude of only 20–30 feet.

This is where Jupiter matters.

Much of the sighting involved bright, distant lights seen for an extended period. The Colorado investigators found that Jupiter occupied the relevant general part of the sky and could account for much of what witnesses described later in the event.

Atmospheric scintillation can make a bright planet flash red, green or white. Autokinesis can make an isolated point of light appear to drift or dart against a dark sky. Group attention can amplify the impression that a stationary source is moving.

For the distant portion of Beverly, Jupiter is not a token debunk. It is a serious partial explanation.

JUPITER

Bright point source at night
Colour changes and apparent motion can be produced without the source physically manoeuvring.

20–30 ft REPORTED OVERHEAD DISTANCE · WITNESS ESTIMATE

No rangefinder. No triangulation. No photograph. No radar. The figure matters because, if approximately correct, Jupiter cannot explain this phase — but it was not measured.

One of the lights came toward the field.

Claire Modugno, Barbara Smith and Brenda Maria went toward the Beverly High School athletic field expecting to show Nancy that the lights were ordinary aircraft.

According to the Condon summary, one of three lights appeared to separate and approach. The women described the nearest object as luminous, disc-like or solid-looking, roughly automobile-sized in apparent scale, apparently flat underneath and silent at close range.

They estimated that it passed directly overhead at only about 20–30 feet.

That estimate is testimony, not measured geometry. If it was badly underestimated, conventional explanations reopen. If it was roughly right, a distant planet cannot account for the event they described.

Important witnesses — but not to the same geometry.

Two Beverly police officers responded while the broader event was still underway. The surviving Condon material records police observation of unusual lights or objects over the school area.

THE THREE WOMEN

Close overhead report

They supplied the dramatic 20–30 ft estimate and the description of a solid-looking, silent object passing over the field.

THE POLICE

Later / more distant observation

The officers' involvement strengthens the overall event history, but the recovered record does not establish that they independently saw the same object at the same close distance.

Do not turn this into: “Police confirmed the saucer 20 feet over the witnesses.” The evidence does not support that sentence.

The Condon study did not give Beverly one simple answer.

That is what makes this case unusual. The same official study often associated with sceptical UFO conclusions preserved a mixed result for Beverly.

Most of the extended observation:Probably attributable to Jupiter.
The women's reported close object:Not identified by the study.

Elsewhere, Roy Craig wrote that the case would fit no ordinary explanation if the witness testimony were taken fully at face value. That was not an endorsement of an extraterrestrial craft. It was recognition that the close report and the distant-light explanation do not fit neatly together.

About fifty degrees — but not yet a locked measurement.

Raymond Fowler later argued that his reconstruction placed Jupiter far from the reported line of sight to the close object, commonly summarized as roughly 50 degrees.

If correct, that would strongly weaken Jupiter as an explanation for the women's close overhead phase.

But the original field map, measured bearings, witness positions and calculation sheet have not been recovered in the current evidence pack. So the ~50° figure remains a later investigative reconstruction, not primary-locked geometry.

USEFUL

It separates the hypotheses.

Fowler's argument is relevant because it tries to test whether the close report and Jupiter occupied the same line of sight.

A case can be partly explained and still retain a residue.

JUPITER

Strong partial explanation

Fits the prolonged distant lights, colour changes and apparent motion. Weak fit for a genuine 20–30 ft overhead passage.

AIRCRAFT / HELICOPTER

Possible partial

Could account for some movement or lights. Witnesses reportedly distinguished later conventional aircraft, but that does not eliminate every aircraft possibility earlier in the sequence.

FIRE BALLOON / OTHER LIGHT

Possible component

Could fit a glowing slow-moving source, but does not neatly account for the full close-manoeuvre description. Multiple causes remain possible.

No photograph. No radar. No trace.

The close pass remains witness evidence. There is no authenticated event photograph, film, radar track, physical landing trace or instrument reading tied to the women's overhead report.

Television interference was also reported during the sighting, but no recovered diagnostic record demonstrates that the object caused it.

WHAT IT DOES HAVE

Multiple related witnesses

A child alerted adults; three women reported a close episode; police arrived during the continuing event; and the case received a substantive Colorado/Condon review.

THE LIMIT

Range is remembered, not measured

The extraordinary part of the case stands or falls heavily on the reliability of the women's close-range visual estimates.

Not “Jupiter or UFO?”

Beverly becomes less convincing when every witness and every light is forced into a single giant craft hovering over the school.

The stronger reconstruction is stranger in a more disciplined way. Much of the prolonged observation may genuinely have been Jupiter. But three women described a separate close overhead episode that the Condon study did not identify.

The question is whether one night contained both an ordinary bright planet and a genuinely separate close encounter — or whether the witnesses dramatically misjudged the distance, movement and structure of a distant source.

The surviving evidence does not settle that.

Follow the split in the record.
