Lt J. A. “Shamus” O'Farrell saw two brilliant objects while returning to the Royal Australian Navy air station at Nowra. Radar operator Petty Officer K. E. Jessop separately recorded three paints in the same vicinity. The strength of the case is not later legend — it is that both men wrote reports in 1954.
On 31 August 1954, O'Farrell was returning to Nowra when he reported first one bright light and then a second. The National Archives of Australia summarises his contemporary description as a “vague shape with the white light situated centrally on top.” Nowra then found radar paints in the same vicinity.
That is why Sea Fury deserves flagship treatment. It is not simply a pilot sighting later embellished by researchers. The surviving documentary trail includes separate reports from the man in the aircraft and the radar operator on the ground.
The case is strongest where the two 1954 records overlap — and weakest where later retellings quietly add manoeuvres, shapes or certainty that the original paperwork does not.
A number of later accounts describe O'Farrell performing a 180- or 360-degree radar-identification manoeuvre, with the unknowns reacting around him. The original 1954 radar-operator account says something materially different.
O'Farrell turns as directed, allowing radar operators to isolate his return and observe the other objects relative to him.
Nowra tells 921 to fly 180 degrees if he wants a bearing so the station can identify him. Jessop records O'Farrell's reply as “NEGATIVE”, after which the paints were not tracked further.
The case does not need the later manoeuvre to be interesting. Removing it actually makes the page stronger because readers can see the difference between contemporary documentation and later narrative growth.
Jessop's 1954 account is independent of O'Farrell's cockpit description and records paints in the same general time/location window.
Without original radar traces, antenna parameters and exact timestamps, the returns cannot yet be reconstructed as a precise physical trajectory.
A radar return establishes a detection under particular conditions. It does not by itself identify the target as extraordinary.
O'Farrell remained consistent that he encountered unexplained lights, but the detail level increased over time. That does not automatically make later testimony false. It does mean the first report should control the factual floor.

Later memory can add leads. It cannot silently overwrite the first-generation paperwork. Where the two differ, show the difference.
Australian Navy intelligence reportedly described O'Farrell as an entirely credible witness and noted that he was visibly shaken. That is meaningful context: this was a trained naval aviator reporting an event in flight.
But credibility should not be converted into range, speed or shape measurements that were never instrumented. The contemporary description remains modest: a vague shape with a central white light.
Later, more detailed shapes belong to the history of the witness account — not automatically to the 1954 evidential core.
O'Farrell later said the 1954 investigation included two additional ground observations. They are potentially important — but at present they survive through his later recollection, not through first-person contemporary statements in hand.
O'Farrell later recalled that a worker repairing the non-directional beacon saw lights pass overhead. Black Vault preserves this claim from later interview material. The next step is to identify the technician and recover any 1954 report, duty log or JIB reference. citeturn231811view1
O'Farrell also later said an air-traffic-control officer at Mascot saw the lights approaching. Again, that could provide geographically separated corroboration if a contemporary statement or operational log can be recovered. citeturn231811view1
Until those records surface, Sea Fury remains a strong pilot + radar case, not a proven multi-ground-witness event.

No raw radar trace is in hand, and the full Joint Intelligence Bureau investigation trail has not been reconstructed from surviving primary records.
“Radar confirmed” is not a substitute for archive reconstruction. The best version of this case shows exactly which records survive, which claims come from later interviews, and which technical evidence still has to be recovered.
Transcribe every original report, routing note and intelligence comment from the NAA files.
Identify Nowra's 1954 radar set, range/azimuth accuracy, sweep timing, clutter behaviour and any surviving plot/log.
Reconstruct RAN, RAAF and civil traffic, astronomical objects, weather and propagation conditions for the exact window.
Can the visual lights and the radar paints be shown, from original timing and geometry, to represent the same external targets? That is the work that would turn “radar-visual case” from a label into a demonstrated correlation.
