Strip away the regression. There is still a UFO case.
Wood, a 33-year-old ambulance technician and trained motor mechanic, was driving. Wright, 25, was the passenger. They were travelling from the south side of Edinburgh toward Tarbrax to fit a satellite television system.
Near Harperrig Reservoir, later accounts place the time at around 10 p.m. Wright reportedly noticed something ahead. The men described a smooth, dark, two-tier or disc-like object low above the road. Wood later estimated it at roughly 30 feet across and around 20 feet above the carriageway, but those are witness estimates rather than measured geometry.
Wood accelerated toward and beneath it. Both later described a shimmering or white curtain-like effect descending across the vehicle, followed by a brief break in awareness or complete darkness. When normal awareness returned, they continued to Tarbrax.
A short drive became the evidential backbone.
17 August is the stronger archival date.
The A70 story is often dated 27 August 1992 online. The stronger documentary trail points instead to 17 August 1992.
Steve Hammond's Scottish UFO Casebook, which cross-references the released Ministry of Defence file DEFE 24/1954/1 and earlier investigator material, indexes the A70 abduction at 17 August 1992. The reproduced official sighting-report material is likewise tied to that date.
Later websites, podcasts and retellings sometimes give 27 August. Until a first-generation witness document establishes otherwise, this page treats 17 August as the controlling date and preserves 27 August as a later-source discrepancy rather than silently blending the two.
The case changes character six months later.
What existed before hypnosis
Two witnesses. A low dark object. A curtain-like visual effect. A break in awareness. An unexpectedly long journey. Arrival witnesses. Reported same-night sketches.
This layer has problems — shared witness environment, uncertain exact timing, no sensor record — but it is the least contaminated version of the case.
What appeared later
Humanoid beings. Medical procedures. Transparent containers. Underground/cavernous settings. Strange machinery. Telepathic communication. The word or concept “Sanctuary.”
These details became the famous abduction story, but they emerged through regression hypnosis after months of UFO-reading and discussion.
The spectacular material is the least secure material.
Roughly six months after the event, Wood and Wright underwent regression sessions conducted by Helen Walters. The detailed abduction narrative emerged in that later investigative environment.
Brian Allan's later case review is unusually important because it does not simply defend the case. Allan explicitly noted that the men had spent the intervening months reading UFO literature and identified that exposure as a serious reliability flaw.
Hypnosis is not a recording device for memory. It can increase vividness and confidence without increasing accuracy, and leading questions can shape recall. The public page therefore treats regression-derived material as evidence of what the witnesses later reported under hypnosis, not independent verification of what happened on the A70.
BUFORA's longstanding caution toward regression hypnosis belongs in the case because this methodological objection is not a generic debunking afterthought — it directly affects the evidential status of the abduction layer.
The transcript does not merely recover detail. It actively helps construct a scene.
Brian Allan's 2000 article preserves a transcript of Colin Wright's regression with Helen Walters. It is valuable precisely because readers can inspect the questioning method rather than rely on a summary.
The session begins with Wright reporting complete blackness. Walters repeatedly encourages him to visualise and feel the scene, asks where he is, what he is seeing, and presses him to move through the experience. As the session develops, the account expands into creatures, a bright room, undressing, an eye procedure, a metallic chair, transport into the craft and later return to the road.
That does not prove the hypnotist invented the material. But it demonstrates why the later narrative cannot be treated as an untouched memory recording. The questioning is interactive, the witness is highly responsive, and the spectacular content emerges within that process.
Important: the page does not claim every question was improperly leading, nor that hypnosis proves fabrication. The narrower point is stronger: regression materially changes the evidential category of the information it produces.
Two witnesses are valuable. They are not two isolated data streams.
Wood and Wright were together during the event, discussed it afterwards, read UFO material in the months that followed and entered the same investigative environment.
What would genuinely strengthen the case
Recover the earliest separate statements and same-night sketches. Compare them line by line before either witness saw the other's account or encountered regression material. Agreement at that stage would carry far more weight than similarities produced later.
What should not be over-counted
Post-hypnosis similarities, shared vocabulary, similar beings or matching “Sanctuary” material cannot automatically be treated as independent corroboration because information exposure between the witnesses and investigators is a live possibility.
The government record came later — and it is a sighting report, not an abduction investigation.
The official paper trail is real, but its chronology is often overstated. Wood and Wright did not report the incident to police or the press on the night. They contacted civilian UFO investigators. A formal account reached the Ministry of Defence UFO desk years later, in 1996.
The report was retained in the MoD's UFO files and later released through The National Archives in file DEFE 24/1954/1. The surviving form records an unexplained aerial-sighting narrative associated with Garry Wood. Its existence proves that the Ministry logged and retained the report.
It does not show the MoD independently verified the craft, investigated an alien abduction, authenticated the hypnosis material or established extraordinary performance. In the wider MoD system, many UFO reports were recorded administratively unless they raised an air-defence issue.
After-effects are part of the story. They are not a laboratory result.
Symptoms
Wood later reported headaches, disturbed sleep and medical testing after the incident. Without complete contemporaneous records and a demonstrated exposure mechanism, symptoms cannot be converted into evidence of radiation, electromagnetic exposure or alien medical procedures.
Polygraph
Wood later passed a televised polygraph. At most, that supports the proposition that he appeared subjectively convinced by his account. Polygraphs do not establish whether a remembered event occurred as described.
The road encounter still needs a case-specific reconstruction.
Aircraft / military activity
A dark object low over a road demands aviation checks. No specific aircraft or military source has yet been demonstrated to match the reported geometry and timing.
Astronomy / visual misperception
Bright astronomical sources can mislead drivers at night, especially on winding roads, but the reported low dark object and curtain effect need exact route geometry before astronomy becomes more than a generic possibility.
Chronology failure
The missing-time claim depends on accurate departure, encounter and arrival times. Later accounts vary. A mundane timing error or memory compression remains possible until the timetable is independently reconstructed.
Fabrication
A two-person fabricated story is possible in principle. No confession or demonstrated hoax mechanism is currently in hand, so deliberate invention should remain a hypothesis rather than a verdict.
The unresolved residue: rejecting hypnosis does not identify the original road stimulus. The strongest sceptical position can substantially downgrade the alien-abduction narrative without yet identifying the original road stimulus. Those are two different questions, and the page keeps them separate.

Which source tells us what?
1992 encounter layer
Earliest witness accounts, destination-household testimony, same-night sketches and any contemporaneous forms are the priority evidence for the road event.
1993-ish regression layer
Helen Walters's sessions and transcripts document the later recovered-memory narrative. They are not equivalent to contemporaneous testimony.
1996 MoD layer
The government file documents that a formal sighting account entered the MoD system years after the event. It is an administrative archive layer, not same-night corroboration.
2000+ retrospective layer
Brian Allan and later interviews preserve useful witness/investigator material but also include years of accumulated interpretation. Each claim should be traced backward before being treated as original.
